Through this resource list we hope to provide you with information that may interest your family. We stress that this material does not reflect Council opinions nor does it necessarily have our endorsement - it is meant as an avenue to access what is available.

We have tried to ensure the accuracy of contact addresses and telephone numbers, but these can change. We ask that if you see any mistakes you let us know.

The State and regional libraries: A number of services are offered including holiday activities and assistance with research. Some ‘Services for Teacher” are also available to registered home educators (home educators are eligible to borrow 30 books for 30 days)

The State Museums offer a range of services including educational programmes for groups especially during holiday periods. They can assist with enquiries on research and also have a range of educational materials for sale and hire.

Services available to home educated students
Health

Health and dental services available to school children are available to children who are home educated by a registered home educator. Contact the health official in your area:

Spectacle assistance is available for students with the purchase of standard fames and lenses. Eligibility is income tested. Application forms are available from optometrists or the Department of Education, GPO Box 169B, Hobart 7001, or phone 6233 7041

Bus Fare Concessions

The concession allows for free bus travel between home and the place of regular tutoring during ‘school’ hours.

The concession is available to a dependent student whose parents or primary care giver has a current benefit card. The student must be studying full time.

Students studying at tertiary level or further education are not eligible.

A letter informing the department of the travelling schedule to be used and a copy of the current letter of approval of home education, from the Minister needs to be attached to the application.

Allowances

Registered home educated students are eligible to apply for the following allowances. Applications should include the wording “Tasmania - Home Education, registered with THEAC’ where details are requested for ‘institution/school name’.

Our newsletter...

We produce a bi-monthly newsletter that we hope is useful to you. Our intention is to include the newsletter on the website and provide regular updates as they come to hand, particularly where an issue is considered important and time is of the essence.

THEAC has a regular stream of materials that pass through the office and we aim to inform the home educating community as best we can with the resources available.

Our library...

The THEAC library is not extensive in terms of the number of books but does have a wide range of materials. We attempt each year to add valuable materials to this resource for our home educators. We invite you to drop in and have a look.

Please ring before hand as the office is attended Monday to Thursday, 9.00am to 12.30pm only.
