Home Education
What is Home Education?
Home education occurs when parents choose to educate their children from a home base. This choice is the outcome of a conviction that home based education will better meet the child's needs.
It is a requirement under the recently adopted Education Act 1994 that home educators of children between the ages of five and 16 years be registered with the Tasmanian Home Education Advisory Council (THEAC).
Where do I get information?
Before deciding to home educate there are a number of important issues to explore. It might be helpful to consider the following:
* Introductory workshops as offered by the Council
* Home education contacts and networks
* Discussions with your local school
* Home education resources
An information kit is available from the Administration Officer of the Council.

How do I register?
Once a family has decided on home education there are two important steps to take:
1. Notification
It is necessary to notify your intention to home educate by completing a Notification Form (included in the Information Kit) and sending it to:
The Administration Officer
Tasmanian Home Education Advisory Council
23 Canning Street
LAUNCESTON TAS 7250
THEAC will acknowledge receipt of your notification form and the Minister for Education will be advised of your application.
Council will contact you and arrange for an appraisal of your home education program.
2. Informing the school
If your child has been attending a school it is important that you inform the school that your child is now being home educated.

What next?
Once you have been given approval to home educate, monitoring of your program will continue at intervals.
The Council is responsible to the Minister for ensuring that the monitoring process is ongoing. Should you have preference, please feel free to request the presence of a particular member during the appraisal visit.
The Council can also offer help and advice on home education matters. It can offer information on the availability of home education resources, curricula and support groups in your area.
It is not the role of the Council to recommend the style or curricula of your home education program but it may be able to direct you to other home educators who use such curricula.
