What is Home Education?

Home education occurs when parents choose to educate their children from a home base. This choice is the outcome of a conviction that home based education will better meet the child's needs.

Before deciding to home educate there are a number of important issues to explore. It might be helpful to consider the following:

2008 Australian Museum Eureka Schools Prizes Home educated students are eligible to enter. 

Entries close 2 May 2008.  For further information on the prizes and how to enter, go to australianmuseum.net.au/eureka or email eureka@austmus.gov.au. And remember - the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes People’s Choice Award will again in July/August be inviting students (and others!) to vote online for their favourite scientist.  Further details, Kristin on 02 9320 6483.

 

Try a Trade Thurs. May 22nd 2008 Workskills Australia Try'aTrade event @ Hobart Showgrounds for Year 9 students.(app.2 hours).  Each child to pick max.3 trades or skills.(app.30 mins/trade). Trades include Motor Mechanics, Horticulture, Fitting Machining, Electrical, Hairdressing, Cookery, Baking, Painting & Decorating, Beauty Therapy, Carpentry & Joinery, Bricklaying, Plumbing.  Each booth includes hands on skills, pathways to the trade, vocational education required.  Interested HE people contact Aaron at SCOPE Ph.6245 7818

Step to the Future Foundation Youth Forum for children in years 9-12 Friday May 9th, 2008 at the Door of Hope, S Launceston.  Designed to present a range of speakers from various fields such as business, sports, politics, and education, and young people who are making a difference, sharing their personal experiences on how they have achieved their dreams.  Details from Diane Allan 0412 466 841 or dallan@steptothefuture.com.

The Launceston Library is offering a selection of junior non-fiction series reference books at very reasonable prices. All are in exellent condition.  [eg *The Marshall Cavendish International Wildlife Encyclopaedia vol 1-25, published 1991 $20; *Australian Knowledge, 4 volumes Australia's Great Scientists, Inventors and Inventions, Great Australian writers and Great Australian painters, published 2000 $1 each and lots more.] If any home educators are interested, they are welcome to contact Jenny Moore at the Library. Our newsletter...

We produce a bi-monthly newsletter that we hope is useful to you. Our intention is to include the newsletter on the website and provide regular updates as they come to hand, particularly where an issue is considered important and time is of the essence.

THEAC has a regular stream of materials that pass through the office and we aim to inform the home educating community as best we can with the resources available.

Our library...

The THEAC library is not extensive in terms of the number of books but does have a wide range of materials. We attempt each year to add valuable materials to this resource for our home educators. We invite you to drop in and have a look.

Please ring before hand as the office is attended Monday to Thursday, 9.00am to 12.30pm only.
